Description

This was going to be the image for the Sun in my Solar Calendar, but like with Earth - I came up with a better idea and so this original version has a place as a normal deviation for my gallery now :D

"Prominences" are those giant flaming loops or "arches" you may have seen on those close up photo's of the Sun. Looking at it - one would believe the flaming plasma would shoot out one end and land on the other. But that's not the case. They rise from the middle upwards with the two sides (often near sunspots - those dark circular recessions in there) acting almost like anchorage points tieing both ends of the strange and massive plumes down. To better help you appreciate the sheer sale of the sun - you could very easily fit the entire Earth under the loop with thousands of miles either side to spare :wow:

Another popular belief is that the sun starts showing more detail as you get closer, but those NASA images of it are viewed sometimes as little as only 2% of the sun's total brightness and undergo filters to allow people to see the details...Naturally it's the opposite, common sense says if the Sun is too bright to look at from Earth, then it would be even more blinding up close. This here like many impressions of the Sun shows details that you wouldn't be able to see without filtering out a huge portion of the Sun's brightness :sun:
