Big thanks for the DD + Vue stuff + Contests

Journal Entry: Fri Mar 13, 2009, 3:38 AM
  • Mood: Optimism
  • Listening to: My mother playing some slot game
  • Reading: My own journals and descriptions, they're long!
  • Watching: Mah precious pageviews grow *crazy laugh*
  • Eating: Not very much
  • Drinking: Anything that fills for lack of food
Lot's of things to report here, I don't know where to start. So I'll give a big welcome to all my new watchers that I suddenly met through the unexpected success of my Where subscriber's money goes deviation, a big thanks to :iconarchann: for featuring it as my 5th Daily Deviation and the no-less-than 5 people that suggested it, and also a big thanks to the random streak of generosity by :iconneowolf06: that bought me a new subscription, I figured I could at least feature a few of his works to return the favour :handshake:

Thanks a lot to EVERYONE for their recent support!!!

Even excluding that crazyness, it's been unusually eventful for me so far in other things, but many still relate to deviantART and what I do on it. I've been working hard on many personal projects and contest entries that everyone will see as time passes and I submit e'm one by one. But perhaps one of the most outstanding big things I've been spending the past few weeks on is building up material to try and sell over at Cornucopia 3D, the online stock-shop for anyone who like me, has Vue and uses it a damn lot! :D with originality in mind, along with ideas for what the store seems to be lacking, hopefully I'll make more money from making stuff that 3D artists can actually use to fill in for the almost nothing that I get from here (its true, I haven't had a commission offer in about 6 months and got a total of about 3 in all last year :p)
One of these resources will be a set of planets and other universal paraphilia so Vue artists who don't have, or know how to use Photoshop can FINALLY make decent space-scenery using nothing but Vue alone, the best part is, it's all function-based as far as materials go, not a single memory-hungry image-based material is involved. The first of some test-renders is seen below:

While on the topic of Vue, I remember promising :iconnukeation: that I’d promote his personal site <a href=[link]">Quadspinner - highly beneficial information and resources for anyone who wants to breach the limit’s of Vue and create stunning works, it’s more than just a landscape rendering program and the works of both him and myself and our new discoveries (like how I managed to pull of a Terragen2 – esque planet up there) are proof that it can be quite versatile with some creative thinking and a lot of time. When I finally get around to setting up a store account on Cornucopia, I will update every time something new from me comes there, and some free stocks for both Vue and Photoshop are still on my list of things to do here, but I’m so busy with other things that I wouldn’t count on it for a while. For now, Vue users will get a kick out of this, which is also by the same guy!
Creating HyperTerrains

Finally, the reason why I’m busy making one work after another whilist neglecting more important issues is since a whole bunch of contests that I’m interested in just happened to come about at the same time as each other. This part is mainly just for my sake so I won’t forget about them since I’ll see them every time I view my page.

The "Almost definitely" pile:
eARTh contest #4: (not announced yet, must add when it is)
Progress competition: [link] Ends April 30th
Kick your own @ss: [link] ends June 28th
Best in the land: Done!

The "Maybe if I have time" pile:
deviantMAP contest: Done!
Illustration contest: [link] ends June 4th

Man I'm looking forward to that "kick your own @ss" one, I';m already thinking of what older works I should try re-making fr it, and with unlimited entries, I can go nuts, but I'll try and limit myself to three. Maybe one for each "main" category I work in, imagine what old deviations like these below would look like if were done again today with my current skill level :D

See, one character illustration, a scene, and a space work,I may change my mind and perhaps add more later, but I think these might make the coolest remakes so far 8-)

Anyway, this journal is ridiculously long again, I didn't expect too many to read it, but this is a good personal record and reminder for me anyway. So it's time well spent!

Well, you sure love competitions! I have never really tried competitions, first time I tried one I was disapointed that the winner was so useless, pthe winner did some painted (not that great) picture, I thought after that they must have felt mine was a fake or something...since it was looking like a game design, and done digitally.
anyway, I love your work, not sure, but yours remind me a bit of MYST, Vue must be a great program, I wish I used it for landscapes, I could do some truly wicked stuff If i got good at 3d and Vue, but I suck at all the complexity of rendering, mapping, texturing and rigging, modeling was the only thing I liked when I was at course.
Well, keep up the great work, and good luck with all your endeavors!

I might as well enter all the competitions I can, since with no job at the moment or no commissions ever coming in - well I have all the time to save personal works for a another time when there's no good competitions going on, they seem to come in massive "waves" which I don't like, since sometimes there's too many for me to enter at once, at other times it can be like - 4 months before a contest I'm fit for even arises :hmm:

Ugh, yeah, I've lost to some really undeserving winner's too, but luckily not as much on here as in real life (hence why I stopped entering any art competitions in real life ages ago)

I still don't know how to properly texture-map something either, my course was basic and we didn't learn anything other than modelling and animating. So while certain things like landscapes and sometimes buildings aren't a problem - things like people, characters and animals are just way beyond my 3D capabilities, but when it comes to characters, I prefer drawing them anyway (most 3D render's of people end up looking hideous!)

Your'e in luck though! only today the most basic version of Vue called "Vue 7 pioneer" has become free! :excited: so I guess you can try before you buy! [link] Couldn't hurt, it's a bit of a weird interface at first but much more straightforward than most 3D programs, if you don't like putting a whole scene together in it, you could always render certains things seperately and use them as replacements for "photos" for a bigger project you might want to do in Photoshop, that's what I did here [link]

Yeah, sounds like something I should be trying to get into, win some things maybe, get my name out there, I have nothing going for me, no commissions from Dev, no job opportunities, no motivation or set goals for my future...I'm just plain stuck in life.

It's too complicated for me to do texturing properly, I saw how hard it is to do realistic people in 3d, and it's far beyond MOST people! man, the programs and things you need just to do realistic hair is ridiculous.

Wicked! I'm downloading that right now! thanks for that man! ^^
Ohh, and I'm looking at your project you sent a link for. :)

Lol, I don't think I'd ever bother getting into full-blow character modelling, texturing and animation anyway. It's way too "technical" and dosn't feel as artistic to me, I think 2D is the way to go with some basic 3D knowledge I have to make a nice base for an illustration (helps overcome any perspective and lighting issues as 3D solves that for you :boogie:) most of the "3D characters/portraits" here are done in that "Poser" program in which you buy all the models and extras and so you aren't really being artistic in those, so many are purchased models (99% of which are skimpily-dressed females) that are then poorly-lit and the final renders are horriffic :ohnoes: the only 3D character modeler I bother watching is *Wen-JR since he actually makes all the models and textures himself :wow:

I guess Vue to an extent can be considered "lazy" since things like trees, textures, skies and all that are there for you, that's why I try to use as many custom trees or self-made materials etc as I can, and also Photoshop over the render in most cases for a bit of an artistic feel :D Good luck with yours, I can help you if you need, but another person good at it is =nukeation who also has some great Vue renders 8-)

Yeah, I think using custom models is better than using pre-made too, I took a look at Nukeation's gallery, he's pretty darn good at what he does! I want to get realism like that in my scenes. ^^
