Snowy mountain by priteeboy Snowy mountain by priteeboy
This is my very first attempt at using Vue 6. Actually it is my first experience with Vue at all. I was trying to avoid the stereotypical snowy mountain scene that lots of other Vue users do in their first try but I did so anyway because it was a not too challenging first task and even though the program and those who use it are capable of producing far better stuff, I still consider it good for a first try.

I had to render this twice! The first time took 7 hours and stupid me accidentally deleted the first render. But this one was better because there is an even amount of light and shadow ( first had only the lit side facing the camera ) But for some reason the second render took 17 hours even with lower render quality ! I think it was because the preview screen didn’t have a chance to catch up. Oh well, I hope it was worth it.

how do you get the mountains part rock and part snow? I can't quite work out how to do that

You need a mixed material, one material being the rock parts of the mountain, the other being the snow - then you adjust their influence of slope/altitude and orientation in the tab in the advanced material editor to your liking - here the snow (material 2) was set to appear at high altitudes and flat surfaces :snowing:

Thanks! I had some really basic knowledge from the couple of times I used Terragen, but Vue is still much more advanced, and Vue 7 comes with so much more too, so hopefully you'll have an even better start :D let me know when you make your first render :eager:

Damn! that happened to me when I upgraded from Vue 6 to Vue 7, it got a message saying my video board's driver was obsolete and an "out of memory" warning each time I attempted to launch it, fortunately I was getting a new laptop at the time, it's still giving me shit about video drivers but I tried fixing that and with half a million drivers to choose from - solving a now minor problem just isn't worth the effort :frustrated:

I sure hope that was just a trial version or torrent :hmm:

Actually PB it was a torrent file i tried to download at a trusted website i have. Lucky for me i unistalled the whole program. My Cpu detected a virus and healed the problem. That's what i get for trying to go the cheap route... :lmao: I guess Im going to have to look into making a small budget and purchasing Maya or another program to start with untill I can purchase Vue. It's cool no harm no foul. At least I learned a lesson... Know your Pirates before you leech there prgms! By the way, I was going to ask. What are your favorite programs to use for your artwork and If you could recommend something, what would it be? Have a great day Priteeboy!

*nods* Brilliant. It also reminds me of the wilds of the Misty Mountains in Tolkien's LOTR.

If only I could visit it. :D Lovely scene. Realism-wise, I think the lower parts of the mountain worked better but the entire thing is gorgeous and I honestly did think it was a photograph at first.

Yeah, I think the bottom part is the best. The parts at the top are too pointy, but I was gad with how it was for a first attempt.

Not sure if I would visit here, looks very chilly, but I would like to see snow in real life though. It never snows where I live.

I love snowy mountains. :D I've not visited any apart from Mont Blanc in the Alps, which presumably isn't as impressive as some of the bigger ranges, but it's well worth visiting - it's absolutely gorgeous. If you want to see real snow, I recommend having a holiday there!

Wow, 7 hours to render? >.< takes about the same time to digitally paint something this size but if I could sit back and let my comp do it....hurray for 3D!!

I thought you used Terragen to do this, I'm not familiar with Vue, but then I'm not that hot with Terragen either.. 3D art programs are so alien to me. Kudos for producing a scene like this one... even if it is typical as you say.

You still kept your mountains interesting, its neat to look at.

7 hours was a lot tome at the time, until another picture took 71 hours to render later on. It really has raisd the bar on what a long render time can be. Terragen seems to be a lot more popular among 3D landscape artists tan Vue, but I just prefer Vue because it's much easier to use and quicker to render.

Yeah, I was surprised at how well it came out too, but I did a lot of studying up on the program and how it works while I was eagerly waiting to get it. Plus because I bought the box set, it also came with this huge, in-depth manual that clearly explains all of its features which was of great help.

Lucky I wasn't, Years ago my brother and mother had the same dream in the same night where I went on a helicopter ride to paint the mountains. But was involved in a fatal crash.

But I was painting in that dream, so going for real to take photos instead would be safer. But if I can make this, then theres no need to.
