Well it's been exactly one month since I last submitted anything :stare: Guess it isn't helped by the fact I'm become sluggish and am also juggling a couple of commissions too. This one took quite a while (mostly to blame on modelling the distant ruins) I finished it like - a month after even seeing the movie that inspired it

I'm a sucker for pretty scenery in movies so I enjoyed Journey 2 the Mysterious Island even though I'm sure many would say it's kinda stupid, but sometimes when it comes to movies you just gotta forget realism and immerse yourself in the bizarre fantasy, and I thought the landscapes and concept of the island was really cool and it took me back to the days when I was a kid and I would draw up equally crazy lands as adventure playgrounds :la:

Some background info to avoid confusion for some people - the strangest thing about life on the island is that big and small are reversed, lizards and insects are massive, an elephant or shark is tiny (I can't say I'd be a fan of giant lizards and bugs trying to kill me, but who wouldn't want an elephant the size of a dog, or a shark you could keep in a fishbowl? :eager:) The ruins are the lost city of Atlantis (at least if I remember correctly) The island is in a very active area and has a habit of sinking and resurfacing, which would explain such a dramatic landscape :omg:

Created in Vue 7 and Photoshop as usual.

Stunning. The first thing I thought when seeing it was 'wow, it looks so 3-d' Yeah..then I saw the category. :ohmygod:

Anyway, the concept behind it is very fascinating. Atlantis holds such mystery in all folklore it's in. The idea of it sinking and resurfacing randomly is brilliant. I like the idea of reversed sizes, although I admit, I'm not fond of bugs, they are less likely to chomp your head off, unlike a shark.

The colours are bright an vivid, especially those in the foreground, and yet it doesn't detract from the volcano of the city in this distance. I think it actually helps draw the viewers eyes to those things. There are so many details too, it really inspires the imagination. Brilliant work!

It's sorta a mix of 3D and digital painting, I love combining the two more than using either one on its own, I get the best that both have to offer this way :D I only use it for landscape pics though.

I had a hard time believing that a forest could exist on an island that sinks and rises so frequently, since there would be too much salt in the soil from time spent in the sea  But in a land with tiny elephants and massive bugs, stuff like that was easy to let go :giggle:

I wanted to really show off how vivid the scenery was too, particularly in the plant life  I'm glad it wasn't a distraction :)

Oh brother, this is awesome. I really can't tell where the 3d-work stops and the 2d work begins. Pretty scenery huh? Yeah, I know the feeling. Let's see: Avatar, optical brilliance, story, not so much. More like a study in what can be done with todays fx. Transformers, awesome tricks, but an even worse story. And now this new thing. Battleship is it? A movie based on the game battleship? Hello... I expect to see fx en masse, and in this case I don't even expect a story half decent. What i want to say is simple: Sometimes I watch a movie just for the fx and the scenery. Remember the movie "The Cell" with Jennfifer Lopez and Vincent D'Onofrio? Beautiful pictures great imagery but the rest... Anyway, it's good to see you're still up and running. Rock on man.

Lol, I think such an issue is so commonplace in movies these days that I don't make the mistake of expecting to see a deep and moving film before entering the cinema, thus I don't come out as disappointed as many since I knew that the effects and scenery, animation etc were the primary reason I saw it anyway :giggle:

And I'll be seeing Battleship too for the same reason. I don't think I would otherwise be interested :lmao: But I guess I still like to call movies "entertainment" rather than "art" since they are made for the masses after all, the general people who really just want 90 minutes of action, violence, love or jokes to escape from their tedious lives ;p So I never set my movie bar too high, nor do I spend a lot going to see them, thus no really hard disappointment on my end :D

But it is kinda sad though, I do feel many moves are just excuses to test out new 3D software, I actually wonder if the software giants actually sponsor these movie ideas since they are a great way of showing off what their product can be used for. I'm sure the companies that make 3D Studio or Vue or anything else love using "Our software was used in Avatar/Transformers/Battleship/etc" as a marketing tool, and dammit - it works :shakefist:

O sure Adobe and eon love it that big fx movies are dependent on their software. And the advertising is working pretty well I'd say. Ok on the movie matter: I'm really looking forward to two movies in particular. "Prometheus" Hell! It's an "Alien" movie. The first one scared the shit out of me. Was pretty young when I saw it. Big horror movie night on tv. Alien and Wolfen, I remember there was one more but I forgot that one. Second movie I'm really looking forward to is "World War Z", I just hope they don't slaughter the book. If they stay close to the book than I can promise the most awesome scenes ever seen in a Zombie movie. The Battle Of Yonkers comes to mind. I don't really know if your're into reading, but if you are, go and read World War Z. Pure genius. And a new take on the whole Zombie theme.

Hmm, I have to say I have never really cared for zombie-related stuff. Just doesn't set off any inspiration fireworks in me :zombie:

Dude, give Zombies a chance. You know, the Zombie-Apocalypse is right on our doorstep, being 2012 and so on. :D Doesn't have to be inspiring, just has to be entertaining. ;)
