This floating fortess of fear is many things - My halloween deviation for this year, submitted exactly one full year after the last, My entry to This contest held by `TerrorCookie and most importantly, the 5th floating island deviation I've added to this slowly growing series. A list of the others can be seen at the bottom.

Is it just me, or have I seen that Tree on the far-right of the island before? Gee gang, no need to split up this time, I've solved the mystery of where that old tree surrounded by graves was located, and it only took a year lol :zombie:

Seriously, it took a year! - not working time of course (though this did take twice as long as usual, the floating island ones always tend to do so) But I mean the concept, I came up with this image in mind only a month after last year's Halloween submission, I was going to do it anyway, but I decided to put it off for 11 months and save it for now, wow a year sure goes fast!

Done mostly in Photoshop (about 95%) with just a good o'l mouse as usual. Theres a little bit of 3D in there for the island and wacky house which was the raw material I started with and work on and around.

Other floating island deviations in order of age:
1st - the tropical lagoon Hang gardens
2nd - autumn sunrise village High rise
3rd - night time city Night flight
4th - snowy ski resort Ski skies
6th - storm station Thunder factory

EDIT: ~Pr3t3nd3r suggested a little "hang-man" to be included, I thought it was a cool idea, so I did a skeleton hanging from the tree...who know's how long ago he was hung :dead: Included some bats also!

Oh wow, I absolutely love this - floating horror island in the moonlight sky! Awesomeness! I love the distorted dimensions you created here, invoking the horror aspects of something "not quite right" - fabulous =D

A good description indeed. The warped dimensions definitely suits the horror theme so well, I see it done a lot :XD:

Nice, and all with using a mouse. I'm an old school artist. Computers were just in someone's imagination when I started out. Just started playing with digital art a week ago. I'm learning it on something call Gimp Photo shop. I saw this piece posted up on the "Why do people blame their mouse/trackpad?". I agree with your comment. Tools don't make the artist, it's the artist that makes the tools.

I spent most of my younger years drawing and painting using more traditional tools too (maybe for not as long as you have though ^^;) Since computers and digital programs were around, but not used much during that time. They certainly weren't as cheap and accessible as they are now  But I liked moving to digital though, I feel less restricted. But I don't see why others can't do both if they really wanted to, I did for a number of years

It's not common for someone to say this is their all-time favourite of mine. But I suppose it's still within my top 25 (which is a lot with almost 200 in total :faint:)

Yes, I sometimes think about including that tree again in another haunted scene someday :plotting:

I think it's just unusual personal taste (Or just less common) that makes this my favorite, rather than the composition itself...? The intense green I normnally wouldn't like but it's not a bad shade and the fact that it's so monochromatic is something I really enjoy. Plus I draw floating islands with things on them all the time... Usually single trees like this one here ;]

I noticed that you also like to make; how to put this, "dramatic" clouds, you know, making them more "being there". Regarding my clouds, the picture was simply too big (lol many times around, i know) for me to give the biggest clouds it's finished touch due to lack of time, and i didn't had the heart to scale the whole picture down, risking leaving out important details :(

Im a beginner doing this kind of art (using colour, normally im a "Black and White" artist), although i had this account for more than three years, mostly inactive until now; so thank you very much for your feedback!

PS. Ask your bro if you can have some of his books - im very curious how you should illustrate one of the books - as i see your pictures has a sort of "Goosebumps style" - anyway, you keep it up, i'll watch ya :D

For these floating island scenes I want to make sure the clouds are interesting too, seeing how they are the only background the scene gets :D

Oh my brother got rid of his Goosebumps books when he hit his teens, or not long after...he's 25 now

I must admit I don't often think about that, you're one of only a few people who have asked.

I must pass though, tattoo's still count as a personal or potentially profitable design use beyond that of simple desktop use or blog features, which so far are the only free usages I allow.

I wonder if the clouds in this image done using your cloud's brush technique [link] ?

Also, if its the case, did you make those cloud brushes using vue renders? Would that be a good way to make brushes?

:iconpriteeboy:
priteeboy Featured By Owner Nov 13, 2011  Hobbyist Digital Artist
I use that technique quite often, even now  But for these floating island ones I want something a little more extravagant and I go for a more conventional method of modifying stock photos and usually painting tons of extra details on them for a more sharp "bubbling" look :dummy: It takes longer but yields more interesting effects. For more normal scenes though I often often for the other method - especially in Vue renders because spectral clouds take so long to render that I'm just better off doing that

I have considered making brushes out of Vue renders. I did start revamping all my self-made brushes a while ago but I needed a long break from it since it was getting very tedious

Absolutely incredible. The amount of effort put into this must have been extreme. I love your use of the tree roots in the grounds below the house, it make it feel as though it has been ripped from the Earth from some kind of force. And the hanged man? A brillant touch to this piece of art. It makes me wonder what the story is for this picture, like, what happened? You've got me thinking deeply about this, nice job! Keep up the amazing work!
