Bowser's Castle by priteeboy Bowser's Castle by priteeboy
My fourth and final entry to the Ultimate Fandom contest, and I think I saved my best idea for last ;) First - the mandatory rundown.

-Ultimate Fandom Contest 3: Video Games [link]
-Gaming Franchise: Super Mario Bros
-Environment or Character: Environment
-My Description: below as usual

Bowser, or "King of Koopa" as he was formerly called, has been present ever since Mario's first adventure, and every evil villain needs his fortress of doom right? so His castle has always been a final stage in each game.
For a couple of months now, I've been wanting to do something like this, and this contest was my motivation to actually do it, since it seemed like a daunting task to try out. Bowser's castle does seem to vary in appearance from game to game, probably because Mario keeps laying waste to all of his expensive castles lol. I was on the verge of drawing the type you see in the latest Mario Kart game, but found a screenshot from a different game (I think Mario Party for the DS) which is where I based this from, and the design on that version looked the coolest of all the Bowser Castle's I've seen :toocool:

Art details: This one is 100% pure illustrated in Photoshop (with a mouse still lol), something I hardly do now that I have 3D and access to stock textures or photo's. I figured it would look better and more dramatic that way, considering my other entry to the environment slot was almost fully 3D. And to also remind everyone that I can do pretty good stuff without the need for 3D too :nod: Everything here was done from scratch in the most traditional way that digital art can get :painter:

Artwork is Copyright property of my gallery. Do not use, edit or display this artwork, or parts of it in any way. Bowser's character design (and his castle's I guess) is Copyright of Nintendo

Would it be possible to get a version of this without the watermark? I know how suspicious that sounds, but I'd like to try and use this as part of a mod for the game 'Civilization V' that adds a Civilization led by Bowser. This would make a great background for the 'leader screen' where you interact with the rulers of other civs. If not, I suppose I'll just have to keep looking for decent images of Bowser's Castle, but it would be very much appreciated, and I'd be sure to get you properly credited.

Hmm, I appreciate your thoughtful asking for permission first. But people using my artwork for games and so-on are kinda the reason why I had to use watermarks in the first place ^^;

Yes, I would imagine. But trust me, you WOULD be credited. I'm using another artists rendition of Dr. Wily for another Civ I'm working on, and I'm making sure they're given proper credit in the mods details, as well as the Steam Workshop page. It's astonishingly hard to find good pictures of Bowser's Castle that are both striking AND at good angles for a leader screen. Your Contribution would be very much appreciated. If you really aren't comfortable doing this, I understand. I'll just have to keep looking I suppose.

Hmm, lately it seems that credit alone isn't cutting it. I've noticed all it seems to do is attract more people to my page asking for free art :hmm: I'm glad you like it but I'm holding on to this one ;)

Would you be alright with myself and my husband using this as the base concept for a 3D cat tree? >_>  If you're okay with it, I will take pictures of the finished product and link to your gallery from my dA page. :)

Hmm...that depends - I don't know what a cat tree is (I keep getting mental images of a tree full of cats...which is just too adorable for me to make a proper decision at this point :XD:)

Hahahaha!  No, it's a place for them to climb and such.  My husband and I had been talking about using a castle idea to build a place for them to climb and recline and such... I'd suggested using a flat board against the wall with key areas in 3D, plus bridges and such.  When I was searching for Bowser Castle images so I could sketch out the idea, your image was the first one on my image search and it was the one that we both really liked.  Not wanting to just take your art and re-imagine it without your permission, I thought I'd ask.  This is for our cats, in our home.  I would take pictures and post them, giving you full credit for the base design of the castle (which would be re-rendered by me in a much less awesome version) for the 2D image on the wall.  I haven't seen anything online like what I'm talking about doing, so I can't really show you pictures, but, I hope I've described it well enough.... :)

Oh, now I know what you mean. I've seen some very creative ones of those (one place having railings across the ceilings they could walk through, and even enter other rooms via little holes that this catwalk passed through :D)

I guess something like that for a purely personal project seems OK :)

Oh, yeah, I'm not selling it, trust me.  Don't even know when we'll have it finished, but I think we're going to blend it into an LotR theme, so your design was the best for doing that. :) Thank you!

It probably won't top the badass incarnation of Bowser's Castle as seen in Mario Kart 8. They make it more awesome with each version 8-)

Would this mean it could be a recreated scene from Super Mario RPG: The Legend of the Seven Stars, when Mario goes to save the princess at the beginning?

It is, isn't it? :dummy:

I'm afraid I wouldn't know - Super Mario RPG falls under the 10% of popular Mario games I never had the chance to play ^^;

good enough.
The only difference to the game is that there was a bridge(that was later destroyed).

Yes, sadly, we find a lot of scrap and rip off of dA on youtube. It's so frustrating. -.-

Hey, I'm so glad to have found the real artist behind this awesome piece of work. Really beautiful lightning and shading effect. I really love it! :love:
You see, I'm a great fan of Bowser's Castle (my favorite is in Paper Mario on N64). :D

Hi,

My boy (6) is a fan of Bowser, and for our new house I would like to print and hang a picture of his castle on the wall in my kid's room.
This image is the best depiction I have seen so far, and I think he would love to have it hanging on his wall.

How can I purchase a copy of this image so I can print and frame it?

Thanks

Good question, and nice to see fans of this gaming franchise follow through to the next generations of kids too :D

Since deviantART doesn't allow artists to sell prints containing existing (copyrighted) characters through their official prints system, the only other option is you can purchase the original artwork file (which is higher resolution and without watermarks) and take it on a USB to a printing store yourself, which might be quicker and easier than me sending an already-printed version halfway around the world via postage ;)

This is of course, on the condition that the original source file isn't re-uploaded on the internet or shared around with friends etc since that defeats the purpose of me limiting the resolution and quality of it on here :iconseriousnod: Last person who purchased this for the same reason offered me about $40 if I remember correctly.

Thanks for the compliment. When I was new here, seeing what the "pros" were doing is what motivated me to improve, so it's good if I can pass that on to someone else now :)

Oh I'm sure they can. But their games are deliberately made to look cartoony to attract that type of audience. There are plenty of "realistic" games out there already. Mario's charm comes from the colourful simplicity of it all :nod:
