Across The Universe by priteeboy Across The Universe by priteeboy
Finally it's time for me to be able to show off a new calendar, after working on this one for months, keeping its artwork in secret the whole time to make sure its fresh and original in the eyes of potential buyers ;) Just like I did before, four years ago (so much for making a new one every 2 years like I promised myself)

Focusing on what I'm best at, this calendar is about hypothetical planets that have the potential to actually exist. I wanted to go far out, but to the point of the impossible or ridiculously unlikely. Having said that, some artistic choices did trump a few scientific ones, but overall I wanted to establish a mood of realism, but also a tribute to the days of traditional sci-fi and space themed artwork which always had an interesting style and equally bizarre concepts :)

There was supposed to be a Flash presentation for this just like there was for the last one, but that fell through. Another way to view the artwork inside so you know what you're getting is to click "buy print" (don't worry, you won't actually buy it unless you follow all the further prompts, you'll just be taken to the shop page) the months will be listed below, just click the month to see the artwork for it.

I loved the last one you did so much I can't wait to check this one out :D I still think your last one has some of the best original styled spaceart on dA.

I'm still pretty fond of the last one, but this one is a step up in the realism department I think. It's too bad I couldn't get a Flash presentation of it made like with the last calendar though since I think this one is more deserving of it =p

Heh, my favorite illustration is also the one used on my birthday's month (May). It caught my attention the most because it sort of reminds me of some places on Gran Pulse in Final Fantasy XIII :D

Hmm, sounds odd of me to say this - but I'm not familiar with that place ^^; Glad your favourite landed on your birth month though, since there's only a 1 in 12 chance of that happening ;p

Now that you've said that....I remember you did said somewhere here on DA that you haven't played much FF, despite your avatar and all (don't be scared, my memory is really good at reminding trivial/random stuff). My bad >_<

That's true. I kinda became infatuated with FF's characters more than the games themselves, which were too hard for me to really bother with 9based n the few I actually tried :ashamed:)

Plus I tend to avoid most games that take 300+ hours to finish, hence why I could never get into the Pokemon games even though I did like everything else relating to it :XD:

I clicked "Buy this print" but am only seeing the option to add it to the shopping cart - which I did, but even then, I'm not seeing a way of viewing the individual months. I'd love to get a look at those because I'd absolutely love to buy this and/or the other 2016 space calendar you've done!

It might depend on what device you're using, or some potential bugs, but I tried it on my end again and it worked for me. After clicking "Buy this print" - don't bother with any of the stuff on the right side of the page (unless you want to <i.actually</i> buy it of course ;)) And just look at the image itself again - the names of the months should appear as links that can be clicked which will change the artwork preview to that of the corresponding month :)

What if it means just writing up art tips and tutorials when you have spare time and posting them on deviantart?

I've thought about that a few times. But some of my tutorials wouldn't be useful unless someone had the same resources I did (some of which I made myself for my own personal collection) or the same software (Photoshop is considered pretty standard, but I also use Vue a lot which is much less widespread among the dA community)

Exotic, eye-catching exoplanetary delights! Separate image uploads + a poll for favourite image could be some nice adverts. Right now I vote for either January, October or December. I like December the most. They're all nice, though.

Long time no see :D Hmm, Sounds like a lot to upload in a short period of time, I sorta like the exclusivity of having them in the calendar alone though. Maybe after they've been that was for another year or two I may upload some separately, but a poll wouldn't be of any use since it can only fit 10 slots rather than 12 ;p

December, or as I called that one "Galactic Gathering" - was the first one I worked on, it's almost ironic that it ended up being the last one of the year, but it seemed to fit that month the most :xmas:

I'd say very long time  Two polls of each half, then a third with the highest numbers from those two! Reuploading for another year is a good idea for re-advertising.

True, December is nice and flashy with a tree-like nebula insinuation. It specially fits for the northern hemisphere since it looks cold. I'd say September looks the most like a christmas tree from far away with the shiny green plants and foregrounded colours.

Those shiny rocks in the front cover are uniquely fascinating, so shiny they're almost like see-through invisibility cloaks. And the title/colour scheme works well there for a slick presentation

December's "coldness" definitely was a factor, as was the festive look of a sky so lit up by tiny lights (the stars themselves). I imagined this being on a Pluto-like planet in an area of the universe where multiple galaxies are on their way to merging together :)

September for my end of the world however is the beginning of spring, so with that one being so green and full of life it felt like a good match to me, but mostly because as I picked some for certain months, others left behind were just slotted into remaining gaps =p

The clear rocks on the title image "Spiral Sunrise" - are actually lumps of ice on another dwarf planet :diny:

That's a great idea for December. Pluto is a fascinating planet worthy of inspiring a place at the outer reaches of the calendar too!

Hmm, do those swamp plants always look green?

Ice indeed, maybe not water ice!

I like how January has the lenticular clouds and a fresh Dawn-like atmosphere. The exotic shapes lend to the idea of 'novelty', hence 'January'.

I must admit Pluto didn't really stand out to me as anything special for most of my life, but this year's images of it for the first time has really made it a lot more interesting. Maybe I just needed a face to put to the name, and it took until July this year before we finally got one. Quite a privilege I must say, now to hope we get a view of its other side before we die, it might be even more interesting :fingerscrossed:

The swamp plants likely would stay the same colour all the time. Being a warm, humid and "tropical" like planet - there wouldn't be the seasonal variations you'd get on many parts of earth. I'd imagine the plants there grow faster too

Lenticular clouds were an idea I always wanted to play around with. I had to paint those in since I couldn't make good enough ones in Vue (that didn't take forever to render). The early morning look was something I'd been wnating to try out too, and I figured the two would go together hand in hand, especially with the sun behind the viewer, allowing for something even rarer among space art to be shown - multiple moons each in the "full" phase

Not only would it be good to see the other side of Pluto, but there is still lots of data to see.

Your scene looks a bit like one of the craters here: pluto.jhuapl.edu/soc/Pluto-Enc…

The atmosphere is rather amazing too: pluto.jhuapl.edu/soc/Pluto-Enc…

So the swamp planet is 'perpetually Spring' huh?

Hah, another good idea! Indeed more novel than extra suns. The silvery moonscapes certainly add to the scene.

I was shocked to see Pluto had an atmosphere that was even visible at all when that picture was released (unless it's an infra-red or long-exposure shot which means the naked eye still might not have seen it that way) the colour image showed it being blue, which also caught me by surprise, since I remember years ago reading that it was estimated to be yellow

Very nice work!  I wish those worlds did "exist" - like at some amusement park or something.
Hey...that's an idea!

Patent the amusement-park concept -- and become rich & famous!

Oh yeah, I named them all since I was going to make a flash slideshow (like I did with my earlier Solar System themed one) but couldn't get the same guy to help me out twice in a row with that for this one. Each was going to be presented in its own little frame with a title and brief description of what's going on in it, but sadly that idea fell through (and after I worked so hard designing that interface too, which actually showed what the planets looked like from space and "clicking" on one would take you to the artwork that matched :shakefist:). I don't have that part anymore though :p

Amusement parks based on hypothetical or even existing exoplanets would be the best thing ever, but I don't think they'd be popular enough due to the rather limiting theme. Maybe a museum exhibit would be more feasible :XD:
